Yes, it's Sunday and therefore time for the Lazy Sunday pictures. Since my entries for the past three weeks have either been non-existent or very erratic, today will be an actual post because I don't think we'll be online again until we move to the next campground on Tuesday. They should have Wi-Fi service there and we hope to be parked close enough to a booster to make use of it.
Friday morning we decided to check out the Wilson Rose Garden located at 1800 Herring Avenue. This public garden features over 1200 rose plants of approximately 180 varieties including old garden roses, English roses, All-American Rose Selection winners, miniatures roses and more. The garden is set up with an information station with brochures about the garden and the different varieties of roses, how the garden is maintained and which types of roses are located in each section of the garden. The rose beds are raised and lovingly maintained by about 60 volunteers who are honored with plaques in the sections they maintain.
I can't imagine how the garden must look and smell in the summer because it was beautiful in the fall. However, many of the plants were starting to go dormant so the experience lost of bit of the impact it would have when the garden was in full, lush bloom. We were fortunate to go Friday morning, because Friday night there was a heavy frost which I'm sure nipped most of the roses. Still, the fragrance of those old-fashioned roses was heady and the colors of all the varieties of roses were amazing.
Dotted about the landscape were sculptures, a gazebo and even a whirligig weather vane by a local folk artist. This would be a wonderful spot to enjoy a picnic lunch and relax for an hour. The city of Wilson has done itself proud with this attraction.
